Once again, it took jurors seven days to find Victoryland Casino owner Milton McGregor and five other defendants in the Alabama Bingo Trial not guilty on all charges, ending one of the state’s more embarrassing moments in recent history.
McGregor and company rejoiced outside a Montgomery Federal Courthouse with family and friends before lambasting the prosecution saying “I love my country. But I despise what my government has done to me and the other defendants. The government lawyers and investigators say they represent the United States, but they trampled on the constitution they’re sworn to defend. They’re paid by the Justice Department, but they showed no sense of justice or fairness. They’re in the Division of Public Integrity, but they showed none of that either, not even a little bit.”
Alabama trial-law superstar, Joe Espy, headed McGregor’s legal team. Almost a year ago, Espy described the prosecutors case as “the tapes, the two crooks and the three amigos.” The jury agreed.
Chalk this one up as a big waste of tax dollars. Viva la Victoryland!
