Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll may have just ruined Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long’s surprise.
Carroll hinted on twitter tonight that his good pal ‘Mooch’ — as in Steve Mariucci — could be headed to Fayettville.
“I still love the Arkansas fight song… But Mooch is the man… Go Razorbacks!” Carroll tweeted.
Mariucci denied having any contact with Arkansas a couple days ago, but we all know the agents do the contacting. Footballscoop.com reported today that two sources had confirmed current UAB head coach and former Razorback offensive coordinator Garrick McGee would be announced as the new head coach by Monday. Also, former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer was rumored to be interested in the position.
Mariucci, 56, is currently an analyst on the NFL Network, but is better known for his time with the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers as a head coach. He was 72-67 in the pros and spent one year as head coach of the University of California in 1996.
If true, Jeff Long may have taken a giant step forward in moving past the humiliation caused by his former coach Bobby Petrino, Long’s first hire as the Arkansas AD. Or this could just be Pete Carroll’s way of propping his buddy up for a gig.
We’ll find out for sure next week.
