Alabama defensive tackle Josh Chapman became the sixth Crimson Tide player to be selected in the 2012 NFL draft on Saturday.
The Hoover High School product appeared in 51 games for Alabama and anchored two of the best defenses ever fielded by the Crimson Tide in 2009 and 2011.
Chapman played the latter-half of the 2011 season with a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee, an injury that forces 99% of players to the bench. He had surgery to repair the torn ligaments in January, but should be cleared to play in time for training camp.
Chapman, 6’1, 316lbs, was the first defensive player selected by the Colts, a team now led by Stanford quarterback and first overall pick Andrew Luck. They drafted tight ends Coby Fleener of Stanford and Dwayne Allen of Clemson before selecting Florida International wide receiver T.Y. Hilton late in the third round.
Cornerback De’Quan Menzie became the 7th Alabama player selected in the draft when the Kansas City Chiefs made him the 146th overall pick in the 5th round. Menzie played two seasons in Tuscaloosa after transferring from Copiah-Lincoln Community College in 2010.
Menzie, 5’10.5, 195lbs, joins former Crimson Tide defensive back Javier Arenas in Kansas City. Arenas was drafted 5oth overall in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. They will both compete to replace the departed Brandon Carr after he signed a free-agent deal (5 years, $50 million) with the Dallas Cowboys.
